Adopt A Street

why are we doing this and how does it work?

It’s a well-researched fact that tidy streets have a positive impact on people’s well-being whereas messy streets attract more mess and criminal behaviour. We adopted the “Adopt A Street” idea from Aberdeenshire Litter Initiative. It’s simple: you sign a pledge that you’ll help keep your street clean and you get a free litterpicker at Leith Library, courtesy of the City of Edinburgh Council.

When your neighbours will see you picking up litter in your street they’ll ask you: “Why are you doing that?” So it’s a great way to start a conversation and tell people it’s a great way to make a difference to the place where they live. I remember one of our neighbours telling me that her daughter told her she stopped dropping litter because she saw us regularly picking it up in our street.
More than 120 streets have been adopted by over 180 people so far (see the map below). Some Leith businesses have also joined the programme.

You can see the map of the adopted streets here. One street can be adopted by many people so it shouldn’t hold you back if you see your street marked on it.
