Adopt A Street

why are we doing this and how does it work?

It’s a well-researched fact that tidy streets have a positive impact on people’s well-being and messy streets attract even more mess and criminal behaviour. We adopted the “Adopt A Street” idea from Aberdeenshire Litter Initiative. It’s simple: you just sign a pledge saying that you’ll help keep your street clean. Email us the signed copy then take a printout to Leith Library and they give you a litter picker, courtesy of the City of Edinburgh Council. Over 150 streets have been adopted so far.

When your neighbours see you picking up litter in your street they’ll ask you: “Why are you doing that?” So it’s a great way to start a conversation and tell people how good it feels to make a difference to the place where you live. I remember one of our neighbours telling me that her daughter told her she stopped dropping litter because she saw us regularly picking it up in our street.
More than 210 people have joined the programme so far. Some Leith businesses also signed pledges.

You can zoom into the online map and look at the list of the adopted streets here. One street can be adopted by many people so it shouldn’t hold you back if you see your street marked on it.
